Shampoo Base (SLES) is a pre-formulated surfactant concentrate built around Sodium Laureth Sulfate, one of the most widely used anionic surfactants in the personal care industry. SLES is derived from coconut or palm kernel oil through ethoxylation of sodium lauryl sulfate, a process that significantly reduces its irritation potential while preserving excellent cleansing and foaming properties. It has been a cornerstone of commercial shampoo and body wash formulation for decades.
What makes SLES shampoo base particularly valuable is its versatility as a starting point. Formulators can adjust viscosity using sodium chloride, boost conditioning with cationic polymers or silicones, add botanical extracts for targeted hair benefits, and incorporate fragrance or essential oils for scent. The base handles these additions without losing its foam quality or stability, making it ideal for rapid product development.
SLES shampoo base is purpose-built for hair cleansing and performs excellently as a primary shampoo foundation. Add 0.5 to 2% salt (sodium chloride) to adjust viscosity and incorporate conditioning agents at 1 to 3% for improved combability.
The rich lather and mild cleansing action make this base ideal for full-body wash formulations. Reduce concentration to 40 to 50% of total formula and add glycerin at 2 to 5% for a less stripping skin feel.
SLES base can be used in facial cleansers but may be too strong for sensitive or dry facial skin at high concentrations. Dilute significantly and combine with a milder co-surfactant like decyl glucoside for facial use.
Excellent base for liquid hand soap formulations that require strong lather and effective grease removal. Add moisturizing agents like aloe vera or glycerin at 1 to 3% to offset the drying effect of frequent hand washing.
SLES base works well in pet grooming formulations when diluted appropriately and pH-adjusted. Use at 30 to 40% concentration and avoid strong fragrances or essential oils that may irritate animal skin.
